Why Do Attorneys Charge for Consultations? (The Honest Answer)
I get it. You are going through something stressful, you are not even sure you need a lawyer yet, and now you are being asked to pay just to have a conversation. That feels backwards. So let me explain why consultation fees exist, and why I actually think they are better for you than the alternative.
Our time is our product
Attorneys do not sell widgets. We do not have inventory. What we sell is our time, our training, and our judgment. A consultation is not a casual chat, even when it feels like one. Before I speak with you, I am thinking through your situation. During our conversation, I am listening for the legal issues hiding inside what sounds like a personal story, identifying what matters, and forming an opinion about your options. That is work. It is the same work I do for paying clients, just condensed.
When an attorney gives you an hour of genuine legal analysis, they are giving you something they spent years learning to do. Charging for that is not greedy.
Free consultations are usually sales calls
Here is what nobody tells you: when a law firm advertises a free consultation, that meeting often has one real purpose, and it is not to help you figure out what is right for you. It is to sign you up as a client. The attorney is pitching, not advising. You might leave feeling like you have a plan when really you just have a retainer agreement in your email inbox.
I am not saying every free consultation is a bad experience. But there is a structural tension between "I am not charging you for this time" and "I am genuinely focused on what is best for you rather than whether you hire me."
When you pay for a consultation, the whole dynamic shifts. You are getting actual legal strategy, not a sales pitch. I can tell you when you do not need a lawyer, when you might be able to handle something yourself, or when a different type of attorney would actually serve you better. I can say that because I am not trying to convert you into a retainer.
It also protects you
There is a legal concept called attorney-client privilege, and it attaches when there is an actual attorney-client relationship. A paid consultation creates that relationship. A free screening call at a firm where you are not yet a client may not. That matters when you are sharing sensitive facts about your family, your finances, or your situation.
What to expect from a consultation with me
I keep my consultations affordable and focused. You will leave knowing more than when you came in, with real information about your options and a clear picture of what next steps might look like, whether those steps involve hiring me or not. I am not in the business of creating unnecessary legal work or keeping clients dependent. My goal is to actually help you.
